A Computational Theory of Dynamical Modeling in Scientific Reasoning

چکیده
The focus of this research is on dynamical modeling in scientific reasoning. Dynamical modeling uses, transforms, and constructs models which capture the causal and structural dynamics of given phenomena. I describe a computational theory of dynamical modeling which utilizes representational and processing languages from artificial intelligence to represent and manipulate the dynamical models used in scientific reasoning practices. My theory uses transformational strategies such as model-based analogy (MBA) and Structure-based Model Transformation (SBMT) to allow the agent to draw on knowledge external to the model to solve problems. By doing so, the agent is able to revise and thus to evolve the model. To carry out this research I have developed a cognitive methodology which employs the following methods: cognitive analyses of historical case studies, expert problem solving protocols, and computational modeling. The thesis of this proposal is that a computational theory of dynamical modeling which includes strategies such as MBA and SBMT is a useful part of a cognitive methodology for studying science. Important computational issues include: the content, organization, and representation of dynamical models, and the nature of the methods used to transform them, e.g. how is knowledge transferred from analog models to target problems, and how are models transformed. Important philosophical issues include: the validity of model-based approaches in scientific reasoning, the validity of computational modeling in the study of science, and the nature of empirical methods in the study of science. The usefulness of my computational theory is demonstrated through a program called ToRQUE which models dynamical modeling in a problem solving protocol.

Dynamical Behavior of a Rigid Body with One Fixed Point (Gyroscope). Basic Concepts and Results. Open Problems: a Review
The study of the dynamic behavior of a rigid body with one fixed point (gyroscope) has a long history. A number of famous mathematicians and mechanical engineers have devoted enormous time and effort to clarify the role of dynamic effects on its movement (behavior) – stable, periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic. The main objectives of this review are: 1) to outline the characteristic features of...
متن کامل3-RPS Parallel Manipulator Dynamical Modelling and Control Based on SMC and FL Methods
In this paper, a dynamical model-based SMC (Sliding Mode Control) is proposed fortrajectory tracking of a 3-RPS (Revolute, Prismatic, Spherical) parallel manipulator. With ignoring smallinertial effects of all legs and joints compared with those of the end-effector of 3-RPS, the dynamical model ofthe manipulator is developed based on Lagrange method. By removing the unknown Lagrange multipliers...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Evolutionary Game Theory in Agent-Based Computational Systems: OPEC Oil-Producing Countries
This study suggests a new method for analysing the behavioral economics issues in the framework of game theory. In this context, bounded rational agents interact with one another in a strategic manner. Therefore, conventional economic modeling techniques are unable to explaine this kind of interactions. In this regard, evolutionary game theory and agent-based modeling are known as the most suit...
متن کاملLogic, Knowledge Representation, and Bayesian Decision Theory
In this paper I give a brief overview of recent work on uncertainty inAI, and relate it to logical representations. Bayesian decision theory and logic are both normative frameworks for reasoning that emphasize different aspects of intelligent reasoning. Belief networks (Bayesian networks) are representations of independence that form the basis for understanding much of the recent work on reason...
متن کاملFull day tutorial on Quantum models of cognition and decision
This full day tutorial is an exposition of a rapidly growing new alternative approach to building computational models of cognition and decision based on quantum theory. The cognitive revolution that occurred in the 1960’s was based on classical computational logic, and the connectionist/neural network movements of the 1970’s were based on classical dynamical systems. These classical assumption...
